Depicted here are sailboats alongside the pine-clad sandbar of Ama no Hashidate in northern Kyoto prefecture, one of the Three Views of Japan (Nihon Sankei). The other two 'Views' are the pine-covered islands of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture and Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture. All three are designated Special Places of Scenic Beauty.

Hiroshige began the series Famous Places of Our Country in around 1832 with three of the prints issued around that time. For some reason publication was suspended for some years with further designs appearing a few years later including Ama no Hashidate in about 1837. Fifteen designs of the series are known.

Another impression of Ama no Hashidate is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession no. 20.50, go to: https://collections.mfa.org/objects/231555
