This series consists of a hundred prints based on a hundred stories related to the moon. This print depicts a scene from the Noh play Funa Benkei (Benkei on the Boat). Benkei, a popular figure in Japanese history, was a loyal retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Here Benkei is shown standing fearlessly on the prow of a ship carrying his mater Yoshitsune; praying in order to repel the ghost of Taira no Tomomori, whose vengeful spirit has whipped up a powerful storm.
