With his body tattooed with nine dragons, the aptly-named Kumonryu Shishin (meaning 'The Nine Dragonned' Shishin) is one of the main heroes of the popular Suikoden tale, which was frequently adapted and performed on the kabuki stage during the Edo and Meiji periods. Here, the famous actor Ichikawa Danjuro is depicted in the role of Kumonryu Shishin in falling snow; his Chinese robes pulled down to his waist revealing his elaborate tattoos as he brandishes a weapon.
