Founded in 1681, Gokokuji Temple is a well-preserved Shingon Buddhist temple in Tokyo. Many of the buildings survived the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake as well as the World War II bombing of Tokyo, and it is therefore one of the few Edo period historic sites that remain in Tokyo today. The temple's bell tower, depicted here, was constructed in the mid-Edo period with a traditional multi-layered gabled roof and houses the original bell which was donated in 1682.
